Welcome 4th Graders!

Welcome our cupboard!

As a class we will use this blog to communicate with experts on various subjects. We will be asking them questions to expand our knowledge on the subjects.

Our first unit is the Wright Brothers. I have contacted a a friend who is very knowledge about the Wright Brothers because she is a history teacher in Binghamton. Her name is Mrs. Reardon and she is very excited to answer your questions about the Wright Brothers.

If you ever have a question or want more information about a classmates question, please feel free to submit your questions and comments on the board.

I am going to start our question and answers by asking the first few questions that I would like some help answering.

Also, be sure to thank Mrs. Reardon for all the important information that she is providing!

  1. Who was the president of the United States in 1903? What type of impact or influences did he have on the Wright Brothers invention?

In 1903 the President of the United States was Theodore (or you may know him as “Teddy”) Roosevelt. President Roosevelt was a little hesitant to fly at first, but in 1908 he made a $25,000 deal with the Wright brothers to build and fly a plane for the U.S. Army and in 1910 President Roosevelt took his first ride in a plane. President Roosevelt’s deal really helped the Wright brothers become famous around the world!

The Wright brothers weren’t originally plane creators, they actually started by working on bicycles. They were very hard workers and never gave up. Of course some of the other things that helped them be successful when engineering a plane were; they were thinkers and good at math! With their support from their family and determination they were able to reach their dreams!

  3. What do you think the Wright Brothers would think of the modern day airplanes?

The Wright brothers would be very impressed with today’s airplanes! I’m sure they wouldn’t have even thought about having passenger planes with beds - or even TVs! The travel time and distance would also surprise them! Their first, longest flight lasted less than 1 minute and now we can take a plane across the ocean! Ultimately, I think they would be proud to see how far their invention has come.

  4. What advice do you think the Wright Brothers would give a large airline today, like JetBlue?

I think the Wright brothers would tell JetBlue to remember where they started and to continue to improve and invent. The Wright brothers took pride in their work and truly lived the “American Dream.”
